Klassisk Sommer Festival 2026 An unforgettable journey opens with an evening devoted to the poetic and passionate worlds of Johannes Brahms and Frédéric Chopin. Taking place in the beautiful surroundings of Nordby Church on Fanø, this opening concert of Fanø Festival 2026 brings together internationally acclaimed Finnish pianist Juhani Lagerspetz and violist Michel Camille in a programme that spans youthful ambition, mature reflection, dazzling virtuosity and profound lyricism.
Juhani Lagerspetz is widely regarded as one of Finland’s leading pianists. His international career gained momentum after receiving a prize at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, one of the most demanding and respected competitions in the classical music world. Since then, he has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas, performing alongside many of the most distinguished musicians of his generation. Renowned for his poetic interpretations, intellectual depth and refined musicianship, Lagerspetz is especially admired for his performances of the Romantic repertoire.
Klassisk Sommer Festival 2026 An unforgettable journey opens with Brahms’s Rhapsody in G minor, Op. 79 No. 2, composed during a summer stay in Austria in 1879. Although Brahms chose the title “Rhapsody”, the work combines passionate expression with remarkable architectural discipline. Its restless energy, sudden contrasts and lyrical episodes reveal a composer at the height of his creative powers.
Brahms’s Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 120 No. 2 follows. Originally written for clarinet and piano for the celebrated clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, the composer later prepared a viola version himself. Today it stands as one of the most beloved works in the viola repertoire. Filled with warmth, elegance and intimacy, the sonata belongs to Brahms’s final chamber music masterpieces and reveals a composer looking back on life with wisdom, tenderness and humour.
At the centre of the programme stands Brahms’s monumental Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5. Written when the composer was only twenty years old, the work astonished Robert and Clara Schumann when Brahms first visited them in Düsseldorf. Robert Schumann famously hailed the young composer as a musical genius destined to lead German music into the future. Grand in scale, symphonic in conception and overflowing with youthful confidence, the sonata remains one of the most remarkable achievements of Brahms’s early years.
The evening concludes with Chopin’s Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise brillante, Op. 22, a work that combines aristocratic elegance with breathtaking virtuosity. The serene and lyrical Andante leads seamlessly into the brilliant Polonaise, whose dazzling passagework and unmistakable Polish character made it one of Chopin’s most popular concert works. Beneath the virtuosity lies a deep affection for the traditions and dance rhythms of his homeland.
