Michel Camille is a British-Finnish violist, chamber musician, artistic director and cultural entrepreneur whose career has combined international performance, artistic leadership and festival development for more than three decades. Widely respected for his versatility, vision and commitment to chamber music, Michel Camille has performed throughout Europe and beyond while playing a central role in shaping musical life in South-West Jutland through his work with the Esbjerg Ensemble and the Esbjerg International Chamber Music Festival.

Equally at home as a performer, curator and organiser, Michel Camille is recognised for bringing together outstanding musicians from across the world in projects that combine artistic excellence with a strong sense of collaboration and community engagement. His work has consistently sought to create meaningful connections between artists, audiences, young musicians and cultural institutions, both locally and internationally.

Michel Camille’s Early Musical Life and Education

Born in London to British and Finnish parents, Michel Camille began his musical education at an early age. At eleven he won a full scholarship to the prestigious Wells Cathedral School, one of the United Kingdom’s leading specialist music schools. There he received a comprehensive musical education and developed a deep passion for chamber music and orchestral performance.

He later continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, graduating with distinction. During his formative years he worked with influential musicians and teachers including Yehudi Menuhin, Ifrah Neaman, Igor Ozim and Norman Del Mar. These encounters helped shape his artistic outlook and fostered a lifelong commitment to musical excellence and collaboration.

Further studies and professional development included work at the Banff Centre in Canada, where he was awarded the Concerto Prize, further establishing his reputation as an outstanding young violist.

Michel Camille and the Esbjerg Ensemble

Since joining the Esbjerg Ensemble in 1995, Michel Camille has become one of the ensemble’s longest-serving members and a central figure in its artistic development. Founded in 1967, the Esbjerg Ensemble is Denmark’s oldest professional international chamber music ensemble and is internationally recognised for its innovative programming, commitment to contemporary music and collaborations with leading composers and performers.

Through hundreds of concerts, recordings, educational projects and international tours, Michel Camille has contributed significantly to the ensemble’s reputation as one of Scandinavia’s leading chamber music groups. His repertoire spans more than four centuries of music, ranging from Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms to major contemporary composers from Denmark and around the world.

Michel Camille and the Esbjerg International Chamber Music Festival

One of Michel Camille’s most significant achievements has been the founding of the Esbjerg International Chamber Music Festival in 1999. Established with the vision of bringing world-class chamber music and international artistic collaboration to South-West Jutland, the festival has developed into one of Denmark’s most respected chamber music events.

Under his artistic leadership, the festival has welcomed hundreds of musicians from around the world and presented performances featuring internationally acclaimed artists alongside emerging young talent. The festival is distinguished by its emphasis on artistic exchange, adventurous programming and close collaboration between visiting musicians and local performers.

The festival’s activities have attracted international attention through broadcasts, recordings and digital media, helping to strengthen the cultural profile of Esbjerg and the wider region. In 2025, Michel Camille was invited by the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea to curate, lead and perform in a chamber music project at the Daejeon Arts Center, reflecting the international recognition of his work as both a performer and artistic director.

Michel Camille and Fanø Festival

Michel Camille is also the founder and artistic director of Fanø Festival and has played a leading role in the development of Klassisk Sommer Festival, a collaboration that brings chamber music to historic churches, museums and cultural venues across Fanø, Ribe and Esbjerg.

The festivals combine internationally recognised artists with a strong commitment to local audiences, families, children and young musicians. Through imaginative programming and extensive community engagement, these initiatives have contributed significantly to the cultural life and international visibility of South-West Jutland.

Beyond the concert hall, Camille shares his musical projects and performances through his growing YouTube presence, connecting with a wider audience and offering insights into his artistic journey. His YouTube channel, Michel Camille – YouTube, has garnered over 10,000 subscribers and features a diverse collection of chamber music performances. Notably, his collaboration on Schubert’s “Trout Quintet” has attracted significant attention, reflecting his ability to engage audiences through digital platforms.

He is also dedicated to mentoring young musicians through masterclasses and educational outreach, inspiring the next generation of chamber artists.
