The Fortuny Piano Trio, consisting of Joel Bardolet (violin), Pau Codina (cello), and Marc Heredia (piano), is renowned for its captivating performances and commitment to showcasing lesser-known and contemporary works. Their debut performance at the Klassisk Sommer Festival, captured live by Danish National Radio, marks a significant milestone in their career, highlighting their exceptional musicality and cohesive ensemble playing.

The trio’s program for the evening is a meticulously curated selection of pieces that spanned a wide emotional and stylistic range. The concert begins with Amy Beach’s Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 150, a piece known for its rich, lyrical qualities and the complex interplay between the instruments. The first movement, Allegro, opens with a dynamic energy that showcased the trio’s ability to navigate intricate passages with both precision and expressiveness. The second movement, Lento espressivo, provides a beautiful contrast with its introspective and emotive melodies, allowing each musician to display their interpretative depth. The final movement, Allegro con brio, concludes the trio with a spirited and robust performance, leaving the audience thoroughly impressed by the ensemble’s versatility.

Following Beach’s work, the trio is joined by Michel Camille, a distinguished violist, for Joaquín Turina’s Piano Quartet in A minor, Op. 67. This piece, with its vibrant Spanish rhythms and lush harmonies, brings a different flavour to the evening. The first movement, Lento – Andante mosso, features a hauntingly beautiful opening that transitions into a lively and intricate dialogue among the instruments. The second movement, Vivo, is a lively dance that showcases the ensemble’s rhythmic precision and ability to convey the music’s inherent joy. The final movement, Andante – Allegretto, ties the piece together with a poignant and reflective conclusion, highlighting the quartet’s exceptional cohesion and musical sensitivity.

The highlight of the evening is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50, a monumental work known for its profound emotional depth and technical demands. The first movement, Pezzo elegiaco: Moderato assai – Allegro giusto, opens with a somber and melancholic theme that evolves into a powerful and dramatic narrative. The trio’s interpretation of this movement is both nuanced and intense, capturing the essence of Tchaikovsky’s emotional landscape. The second movement, Tema con variazioni: Andante con moto, presents a series of variations on a theme, each showcasing different aspects of the trio’s technical prowess and interpretative skills. The final variation, Variazione finale e coda. Allegro risoluto e con fuoco–Andante con moto, brings the piece to a thrilling and passionate conclusion, leaving the audience in awe of the trio’s extraordinary performance.
