Beethoven II

Tim Crawford

Experience a 2nd evening of exceptional music by Beethoven and Haydn. Beethoven’s String Trio in E flat major was influenced by Mozart’s string trio, a masterpiece also in E flat and also with six movements. Beethoven’s innovation is to push the trio’s capabilities even further, with full bodied writing often taking the piece beyond three and even four parts with the use of double stopping.

Between the 1760s and 1770s, Haydn wrote over 120 trios for baryton, viola, and cello, primarily for his patron, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, an avid baryton player himself. These trios are intimate, charming, and full of inventive textures, offering a glimpse into Haydn’s wit, imagination, and skill at writing music that was both personal and elegant.

Voices of Romance – Schubert and Taffanel

Kerstin Thiele

Written in 1876, Taffanel’s Wind Quintet in G Major is widely regarded as one of the cornerstones of the wind quintet repertoire. It’s a piece that celebrates the individual colours of the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn, while also revealing how seamlessly they can blend.

Composed in the final months of Schubert’s life in 1828, the String Quintet in C Major is widely regarded as one of the most profound and transcendent works in the chamber music repertoire. By adding a second cello instead of the more traditional second viola, Schubert enriches the ensemble’s sound, creating a dark, resonant foundation that supports the soaring melodies above.

Passions Unbound – Janáček, Mendelssohn og Beethoven

Maia Cabeza

“We’re delighted to let you know that complimentary cheese and wine is being served — please help yourself and enjoy!”

Leoš Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1, known as the “Kreutzer Sonata,” was composed in 1923 and is one of his most emotionally intense works. Inspired by Tolstoy’s novella of the same name, the quartet captures themes of passion, jealousy, and tragedy through restless rhythms and vivid, speech-like melodies. Abandoning traditional structures, Janáček creates a raw, urgent musical narrative that reflects the psychological drama of the story.

At the age of 20, Mendelssohn composed his String Quartet No. 1, Op. 12 during a time of travel and rapid artistic development. Inspired in part by Beethoven’s late quartets, he uses classical structures as a foundation while bringing in the warmth, lyricism, and emotional depth of early Romanticism. The piece reflects both his respect for tradition and his own emerging, individual voice.

Completed in 1806, Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 59, No. 3 is the third of the “Razumovsky” quartets, commissioned by Count Andreas Razumovsky, the Russian ambassador to Vienna. In this work, Beethoven pushes the boundaries of the string quartet, expanding both its expressive range and structural complexity.

Romantic Splendour – Brahms & Taneyev

Helene Clemant

Two grand Romantic works: one by the German master Brahms, the other a towering Russian counterpart, Taneyev.

Brahms composed his String Quintet No. 2 during the summer of 1890 in the idyllic setting of Bad Ischl, Austria. Originally intended to be his final composition — Brahms even hinted at retirement afterwards — the work radiates a youthful vitality that belies any notion of farewell.

A student and close associate of Tchaikovsky, Sergei Taneyev composed his Piano Quartet in E Major between 1906 and 1911, during a period when he was refining his reputation as Russia’s leading contrapuntist. Taneyev’s deep admiration for classical form and structure — particularly that of Beethoven and Brahms — is evident throughout the quartet.

Violinist Maria Wloszczowska, known for her remarkable international acclaim, joins Hélène Clément, alongside other distinguished artists such as Pablo Hernán Benedí, Christian Ihle Hadland,  Michel Camille, Pau Codina, and Eddie Pogossian. This selection promises a journey through the emotional and technical landscapes of chamber music, offering a concert of profound beauty and complexity.

“We’re delighted to let you know that complimentary rosé wine is being served — please help yourself and enjoy!”

Join us at the Syddansk Musikkonservatorium in Esbjerg on Saturday, 24th August at 4 pm for a captivating concert featuring world-class musicians who are highly sought after internationally.

Today’s programme brings together music from very different times and places, each piece offering its own story. Brahms’s String Quintet No. 2, written near the end of his life, has the richness and depth of a composer looking back with clarity. Damase’s Trio, from 1968, brings a lighter, more playful spirit — reflecting a time in post-war France when tradition met modernism. And Taneyev’s Piano Quartet shows how early 20th-century Russian composers were finding their own voice within the Western classical tradition, something Taneyev cared deeply about as both a composer and a teacher.
